Guidelines for Team Mentors:

Who can be a mentor?

University & collage students (and fresh graduates) who have had exposure to leadership roles at school, university, college and/or in the community.

Benefits of being a Mentor?

The team mentor experience usually proves to be very valuable and enjoyable! Aside from the $200 monetary compensation you will recieve for volunteering, you gain valuable insight on mentorship. Past mentors report that the experience allowed them to polish their leadership skills, and allowed them to learn to engage a group of youth younger in age than them. In addition, the YLDP mentorship experience can be a great asset to place on resumes and futiure professional applications.

What are main duties of a team Mentor?

  • Team mentors will work closely with the team members,

  • Help understand the themes covered in the sessions

  • Help their group engage in meaningful discussion and participate effectively in brainstorming sessions in the workshops

  • Help select the field project topic

  • Guide team leadesr in planning the field project, dividing it into various tasks, and assigning tasks to team members, etc.

  • Help team leaders follow up with team members

  • Guide the team leaders to prepare a brief report of the project

  • For doing this you don't have to be physically with them all the time, much of this can be done over the phone or email.

Is it a MUST for the team mentors to attend ALL sessions?

Yes, it is a must for team mentors to attend all the sessions unless due to exceptional circumtances. Team mentors' help and guidance is needed in the workshops and field projects.

What is the minimum time commitment expected from team Mentors?

At the minimum, team mentors are expected to attend each of the weekly sessions and through the week guide the team over the phone/email (approx. 1-2 hours/week aside from the sessions themselves)

Testimonials

"Meeting with Toronto police as part of our last week’s YLDP project on how youth could help police in keeping our neighborhood safe was an awesome experience. I didn’t know that police could be so friendly with youth! Thanks to ICNA-YM for providing me this opportunity …" - YLDP 2005 participant
