About Our Domestic Healthcare Program

Although Canadian Healthcare is domestically funded through the National Medicare Program, coverage only accounts for 70% of Canadian Healthcare needs. In order to fill this gap, ICNA Relief Canada has pledged to support Canadian Hospitals through our Domestic Healthcare Program.

In the past few years, through your help, we have supported/funded three hospital Projects in Mississauga, Scarborough and Brantford. These three Projects have totalled more than $270,000.00 in funding as well as another $400,000.00 in in-kind donations. These Hospitals include: Scarborough General. Brantford General, and Credit Valley Hospital.

Please support ICNA Relief Canada in its efforts to fill the gap by supporting our Canadian Hospitals.

Transforming Healthcare in Scarborough

Scarborough is a vibrant, fast-growing, and diverse community, yet it has long been underserved in healthcare infrastructure. With one of the lowest average household incomes in the Greater Toronto Area, a population where more than 74% are visible minorities, and nearly 60% are newcomers, the need for equitable healthcare investment is urgent.

ICNA Relief Canada is leading a $1 million campaign to support three cornerstone projects at the Scarborough Health Network (SHN). Together, we are helping build a healthier and more equitable future for our community.

1. A New Coronary Care Unit (CCU)

Heart disease disproportionately affects Scarborough’s population, especially within the South Asian community. SHN’s cardiac program serves more than 40,000 patients annually, with over 4,400 requiring critical care.

This project will:

  • Expand the CCU from 10 to 16 private, fully equipped rooms.
  • Enable emergency cardiac procedures directly within the unit.
  • Support a projected 20% increase in cardiac patients over the next five years.
  • Improve outcomes with 24/7 monitoring and integrated care teams.

2. Education & Research Centre for Medical Training

In partnership with the University of Toronto, SHN will launch the Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health (SAMIH)—the first medical school of its kind in the Eastern GTA.

This transformative project will:

  • Train new physicians, nurse practitioners, and healthcare professionals every year.
  • Help address the region’s critical physician shortage.
  • Provide hands-on learning at SHN hospitals through a purpose-built Education & Research Centre, set to open in 2027.

3. A State-of-the-Art Diagnostic Imaging (DI) Department

SHN performs over 335,000 imaging procedures annually, but its current facilities are outdated and spread across multiple sites. The new Northpine Diagnostic Imaging Department will bring all services together within a modern 36,000 sq. ft. space.

Key features include:

  • Advanced CT, MRI, ultrasound, and interventional radiology suites.
  • Ontario’s first community hospital model integrating vascular surgery with radiology.
  • A significantly improved patient experience with modern waiting areas, faster service, and up to 50% shorter wait times.

This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform healthcare in Scarborough. Your donation to ICNA Relief Canada’s campaign will directly fund life-saving infrastructure, inspire future doctors, and ensure timely diagnosis and treatment for our neighbours in need.

Together, we can bring equity and excellence to Scarborough’s healthcare system.
